To use a Master Template, place it on the pieced wedge and align the all-important on-grain patch 1 and the center axis. Don’t expect every clue to match a sewing line. Now, assess how and where the pieced triangle is off. Sometimes the seam allowance along the side seam is too narrow or too big. Sometimes, identifying one unruly seam as the culprit is enough to adjust the design. Sometimes the mature, sensible thing to do is take a deep breath, rip, and repair.

A triangle that ends up too big can’t be automatically fixed by chopping off the excess at the side seams. If the guilty party is an allover fabric, whack away, fitting the shape to the Master Template. A little more/a little less won’t make much of a difference. But never trim a fussy cut that’s primed to meet its identical twin without weighing the consequences. If only one is trimmed, the joint between two mirror image motifs is no longer the same. It’s okay if one of twelve connections doesn’t match. But if a pack of prima donnas is threatening to ruin the production, try a Master Template without seam allowance.

Without Seam Allowance

Another remedy for healing a warped wedge is to mark the side seam sewing lines on the wrong side of the finished triangle. Otherwise, there is an assumption that the edge of the completed fabric triangle is accurate and can be used to align to the neighboring triangle. For this remedy, you’ll need to make a full-size Master Template without seam allowance.
