Chapter Seven

Zach glanced around the tent, his gaze instantly drawn to Sabrina standing in the buffet line with a tall man, his head bent in her direction, as if hanging on every word she said. His jaw clenched so tight, he could hardly speak. But he felt compelled to know who the man was. He leaned toward his friend, Chad, and whispered, “Who’s the couple over there, the blond guy with the woman in black?”

“That’s Sabrina White, the runaway bride. It’s a pretty recent scandal. Everyone was talking about it. Guess you were out of town at the time.”

Zach was listening to his friend as he sat down between Chad and Pam at a white linen-covered table, but his eyes were on Sabrina. “Is that the guy she left?”

“Yeah, that’s him, Adam Barker. I can’t believe they’re still together.”

Zach’s stomach lurched and suddenly the shrimp scampi, crab cakes and asparagus spears covered with aoli dressing on his plate looked totally unappetizing. “Are they?” he asked, hoping he didn’t sound as interested as he was.

“Looks that way from here, but your guess is as good as mine,” Chad said. “I hear her family was livid.”

“What was the deal?” Zach asked.

“Probably the usual. Wedding jitters.”

“That’s all?”

“I don’t know. I’ll introduce you. You can ask her.”

“You know her?”

“Not very well. She’s not a partyer. Never shows up at the bars on Union Street. He’s a venture capitalist. Some big shot at McNeill Perkins.”

Despite his efforts to find out more, the conversation turned to other gossip. Zach forced himself to eat a little and drink some wine. He had no interest in flirting with Pam, so she turned her attention to some other guy while he continued to stare at Sabrina and her ex-fiancé across the room.

He searched his memory, trying to remember what she’d said about her almost-marriage. The most hopeful thing he’d heard tonight was that she was the one who’d broken off the engagement—albeit at the last minute. That was one piece of the puzzle that was the runaway bride. Would he ever fill in any more blanks?

Chad tapped him on the shoulder, startling him. “Hey, buddy, time for the auction.”

Zach grimaced and stood up. “Already?”

“Afraid no one will bid on you?”

“I couldn’t take the humiliation. What about you?”

“I’ve got someone standing by.”

“You mean this thing is rigged?” Zach asked.

“It’s all fixed. Who cares, as long as we raise money for charity? Come on, didn’t you tell somebody to bid on you?”

He’d asked Sabrina, but what were the chances she’d actually go through with it? Not only was she with her ex, but she and Zach had decided they had no future, so why on earth would she voluntarily spend a weekend with him?

These thoughts went through his mind as he took his place on the stage with Chad and a dozen other bachelors. Using a microphone, the emcee described each of the men, their stats reverberating around the canvas walls of the tent as if they were cattle at a country auction.
