Chapter Fifteen

Refusing tea, grateful for the news that Snow seemed unhurt, Shawna greeted Billy with a touch on his shoulder that didn’t get shrugged off as most of her touches did. Then she lifted the frantic puppy for hugs and pets.

Standing behind Billy, her glare at the innocent-looking John McCrae received a head twist to one side and a sheepish shrug. Brilliant blue, his eyes signaled his happiness and glowed with such joy that she noticed it immediately. In fact, they sparkled as brightly as the multi-colored twinkle lights on Alice’s early Christmas tree. Glancing down under the table, she noticed his hand resting on his thigh. It was clenched so tightly that his whitened knuckles told their own story.

If ever a guy tried to look uncaring for his indiscretion, John McCrae was that man. Could you blame him? A headache started clamoring, needing medication, but instead she stretched her neck and made herself relax. For now…

Gathering her clan and getting them to go back home seemed rather rude and a downer, but she had no choice.

“Sir, can we play again?” Billy not using John McCrae’s name seemed weird, but Shawna had the feeling that Billy still didn’t know who John was and, therefore, didn’t know of their relationship. No way was she going to be the one to spill the beans unless Gerda was on board.

John’s sidelong glance told her how nervous he’d become since she’d arrived, but he smiled at Billy, held out his hand to shake the boy’s and grinned his consent. “Anytime, champ. If Shawna approves, that is. You’re a natural, Billy. Just like me when I was your age, only I didn’t have anyone to play against.”

“Me neither. A friend of my mom’s taught me before she kicked him out. Then I played at school online. It’s fun.”

Before Billy and Becky left, Snow now clutched close in Billy’s arms, the boy sidled over to Shawna and whispered, “His name is John Reid and he’s a really good chess player. He says he’ll teach me, Shawna. I like chess.”

“Right! Good to know. It’s time for you to go home with Becky now and get at your homework. We’ll talk later. I just want to get Alice’s diagnosis for Snow and see if we need to do anything special for him.”

Once they left, Alice explained how they’d brought Snow to her and she could see that he’d been shaken, but after examining the puppy, she was pretty sure that he wasn’t injured. Then Billy had spotted the chess table and one thing had led to another.

“Thanks for helping in the emergency, Alice. I appreciate it.”

“It was John here who saw the accident and calmed the situation. You have him to thank.” Alice looked from Shawna to John, who wouldn’t meet her eyes and she took the hint. “I think I’ll go and start dinner.”

The minute they had the room to themselves, Shawna attacked. “What the hell did you think you were doing?”

“The dog got run over. I was there.
