Why is it that we women have such a difficult time owning our awesomeness? Why do we downplay ourselves, acting modest if another points out our beauty, talents, or success? We’re given the message that we must be gorgeous and accomplished to be worthy, but we rarely take even a moment to appreciate those qualities in ourselves. We always seem to focus on what we lack—still a little too pudgy, a little too broke, a little too lonely, a little too neurotic. Owning your total awesomeness means you recognize, praise, and love yourself now. Celebrate the victories you’ve already achieved, appreciate the abilities you already have, honor the beauty you already possess—without modesty or self-deprecation. Without immediately moving to counter it by saying, “Yeah, but that was no big deal.” Do it fully. Own it completely. Eat yourself up till there’s not one morsel left. This is the way to create more and more of the things you want.

Look, even if she is stunning supermodel material, she’s not more awesome than you. Even if he summers in Sweden and winters in Vail, he’s not more awesome than you. Even if she started her own business and is a billionaire at twenty-five, she’s not more awesome than you. Even if he just shot the cover of your favorite nature magazine and travels the world seeking out new species of wild orchids, he’s not more awesome than you. Even if her cocoa skin is spotless and her hourglass figure is flawless, she’s not more awesome than you. Even if she is a famous movie star dating the hottest guy in Hollywood, she’s not more awesome than you. Even if she can recite all the U.S. presidents in order, knows the function of mitochondria, and can name all the major battles of the Crimean war, SHE’S NOT MORE AWESOME THAN YOU.

So—your being awesome does not mean others are less awesome. And when others are awesome, it doesn’t mean you are less awesome. It just means everyone gets to be awesome! What’s more, beyond knowing that you are awesome, this principle is all about knowing that life is awesome. Self-love is life-love. Which is indisputably—yes—awesome.
