The important thing to remember is that these changes do not necessarily follow an immediate timeline. They may not show up for three, four, or even five days after the initial trauma.
Physical Inactivity
This is the most important one of all. We are born with approximately one hundred billion brain cells, or neurons. We lose about sixty thousand to ninety thousand a day through natural attrition, which is about one per second. If you want to significantly increase this loss, physical inactivity is one of the most efficient means of doing so. You can speed up the loss even further if the physical inactivity occurs in the same monotonous environment. This is deadly for people who are shut-ins, going through long-term convalescence, or those in senior and old-age homes. Not only is there no physical activity, but they are in the same, unstimulating environment. It is not much better for those who go to work every day and then come home and sit in front of the same television, in the same room, for five or six hours a night, every night.
“The most effective way to exercise your brain is to exercise your body.”
