Brown rot. Apricots, cherries, peaches, and plums are

susceptible, especially in humid areas. This fungal disease

can cause blossoms to die and creates brown spots on

fruit, eventually destroying it. Remove and destroy dam-

aged fruit and any branches showing lesions. Sulfur or

copper sprays also help.

Damping-off. New seedlings can be attacked by this fungus, causing plants to keel over at soil level. The plant’s

lower stems usually appear thin and dark, as if crushed

or rotting. Damping-off also affects seeds before they

sprout. Start seeds in sterilized containers and soil, pro-

vide excellent drainage and air circulation, and do not

overwater.

Clubroot. This fungal infection causes the roots of broccoli, cabbage, kale, turnips, and other crops to swell and

become twisted, preventing them from absorbing water.

Affected plants appear stunted or wilted. Unfortunately,

clubroot lingers in the soil; do not replant the same plants

in an infected spot for several years. Add lime to the soil.
