Associate Your Bed with Sleep

Another well-established behavioral treatment for insomnia is called stimulus control. The basis behind stimulus control is to associate your bed only with sleep, not anything else. This means not lying in bed tossing and turning, not paying bills in bed, and not having a heated discussion with your husband in bed. Basically, you should do nothing but sleep in your bed (although romance is allowed!). All of these other behaviors that you may engage in while in your bed or bedroom can contribute to insomnia. The same holds true for resting in bed or lying in bed for a long time hoping to eventually fall asleep. The basic principles of stimulus control include the following:

• Only go to bed when you feel sleepy.
