CHAPTER 13

The pale light of dawn was beginning to shine into the cave by the time Bree settled down to sleep. She was exhausted. Each of her feathers felt like heavy boulders, her eyelids drooped constantly, and her head felt like it was full of cobwebs. With a massive yawn, Bree perched on a small ledge that jutted out of the cave wall, shivering when her talons met with the frigid stone. She was too sleepy to care about the cold. Bree closed her eyes and instantly plunged into a deep sleep, joining the rest of the tribe birds as they slumbered. At first, everything was normal.

Bree was having an ordinary, non-traumatizing dream, which was certainly a nice change of pace. Within her dream, she flew high above the Falcon Tribe’s grassland, relishing the warm breeze as it ruffled her feathers. Bree laughed happily as she raced with friends who didn’t exist in the waking world, trying to see which falcon flew the fastest. For a moment, life within Bree’s dream world was perfect. But that was until the sky suddenly flashed purple. Bree pulled herself into a hover, startled. What was that? she wondered. Surely I imagined it. It happened so quickly—and the sky is blue again.

“Catch up with us, Bree,” one of the falcons playfully called, snapping Bree out of her daze. “Don’t be a slowpoke!” He zoomed away, laughing happily. The others cheerily followed him without a care in the world. Bree hesitated for a long moment before following her friends, trying not to show how freaked out she was. Bree’s top priority in life was fitting in, after all. She was the most ordinary, normal bird someone could hope to meet. There was nothing about Bree that made her stand out. Nothing at all.

The group of young falcons landed in the tall golden grass, just outside of the tribe’s camp. They sat in a close circle, munching on freshly caught mice and telling stories through full beaks. Bree stared at the ground. She wasn’t hungry, which was odd, since she was always hungry. Something feels wrong, Bree thought anxiously, although I have no idea what. I feel different. It’s like I’m forgetting things that are really important. I should be worrying about something. But what? There’s nothing to worry about. Not when I’m with my friends. Bree touched a wing to her forehead, feeling dizzy.

“So, what do you say?” one of the falcons asked. A silent moment passed. “Hello? Earth to Bree? Are you even listening to us?”

Bree looked up. Her eyes widened when she realized that everyone was staring at her. Bree gave her head a quick shake, feeling her heartbeat quicken. “Sorry,” she mumbled. “I hadn’t been paying attention. What’s going on?” Bree shifted her talons and adjusted her wings, trying to appear as outwardly perfect as possible. There was nothing more important to Bree than showing birds how collected she was. Everyone’s opinion mattered to Bree. That doesn’t seem right, she thought warily. I don’t care about what other birds think.
