A feeling of safety is important in a relationship, a feeling that it is safe to be the best version of yourself. If you find yourself drawn to men who leave you feeling emotionally unsafe or off-kilter or not good enough in some way, you’ll want to explore why you seem to be attracted to those types. Or maybe you find that you consistently turn away men who treat you well and make you feel safe. That’s surely something to investigate. Remember that you’re looking for the patterns in your love life that leave you unfulfilled. Pay close attention to the feelings you’ll be experiencing with the men you start to date more seriously; more than likely, your feelings will give you guidance as to who and what will make you happy long-term.

By paying attention to and honoring your feelings, and then acting accordingly in response to those feelings, you allow yourself to hold the power in the dating world. You don’t pursue or enable men whom you feel emotionally unsafe around or who make you feel bad about who you are, and you do pursue and appreciate men who you feel safe around and who make you feel good about who you are—that being you is good enough. A therapist (or your mentor or coach) is useful in this regard, because he or she can help you sort through the feelings you’re experiencing in a budding relationship.

One quick caveat: Being who you are doesn’t give you license to be obnoxious, selfish, or rude, if that’s who you are. The chances of finding a man who wants to put up with a lifetime of narcissism and anger are pretty darn low. Remember: Being who you are means being the best version of yourself. If you exhibit these qualities on a regular basis, you should consider getting out of the dating pool temporarily and working on yourself either via therapy or coaching so that when you do start to meet men, you don’t ruin potentially great prospects by smothering them with your insecurities and anger.
