Master Your Time
Sheela was an advertising executive in a garment
manufacturing company. She was also a wife and a mother. As her company grew and diversified into exports she found it increasingly difficult to handle her job and household activities, despite having a servant, and her husband and children being co-operative. She was growing tense and thinking of her job while at home and vice-versa.
Once on a trip to the U.S. she decided to attend a time management course given by Dr. Dru Scott. She found the training helpful and it enabled her to do three times as much work as she was doing earlier.
Here is what she learnt from her training.
Add Useful Time to Your Life
Purpose : To make maximum productive use of the time available to you.
Posture : Immaterial
Duration : In conjunction with the day’s activities.
Procedure
This time management is based on four fundamental rules.
1) It is people-oriented, not activity-oriented.
2) It is based not on rigid rules but on life styles.
3) It emphasises information as well as motivation.
4) It is flexible enough to be applicable to anyone.
You should begin by changing some of your attitudes to time. If you have the tendency to wait for when you will have more time to do a job, begin by accepting the reality of the 24 hour day. You cannot stretch time. But you can use this moment more productively.
Don’t be bothered if someone else’s time management does not work for you. Find out what works for you best and adopt it as your technique.
If you make time schedules and then misplace them, or for some other reason are unable to carry them out, try to discover how you feel about these schedules. Do you impose them on yourself against your better judgement. Do they make you feel uncomfortable? Why? Could you reward yourself in some way for sticking to these schedules? Would any alteration in them make them more attractive. For example, by interspersing the item in your schedule with something you love to do.
Keep trying out new ideas—many of them will come to you from this chapter itself.
Is your life a mess because others around you are disorganised? Don’t depend on them. Take the initiative to organise things yourself and establish some rules.
Even if you can’t have everything your way you may be able to organise enough of your life to manage your time better than you are doing it today.
Learn techniques to reduce interruptions, they are great time wasters. If you think time management is a dull discipline, remember that the time you save can be put to exciting uses.
Don’t wait for someone else to motivate you to save time. It is the most precious resource you have and irrecoverable when it is lost. You should need no other reason to extract the maximum profit from your time.
Are you one of those people who are always late, for every appointment and function? Find out why. Are you looking for attention? Does it give you a sense of power of having
