Tapping into a range of learners and their various needs is essential, and sketchnotes provide one more option to do so. They allow students to show their understanding visually and to organize the information in a way that makes sense to them.
My favorite way to utilize sketchnoting is to focus on listening comprehension, which is often a difficult skill to teach. I find that using podcasts and videos really lifts the level of my studentsâ comprehension, and they are able to retell the content in a more detailed, organized manner. First, students watch a National Geographic video or listen to a Brains On! podcast, which are some of my favorite resources (scan the QR codes for more information). We typically will do this as a whole class. Next, they sketchnote the key points on their own. Finally, they give both oral and written retells based on their visual notes, usually to their table group.
My biggest challenge with sketchnoting is the amount of pre-teaching that is necessary in order for students to sketchnote at a pace that is useable in the classroom. With elementary students, it is really important to model organizational structures, as well as when and why you might use the various types. It is also important to teach some of the fundamental skills, such as bulleting, call outs, text styles, and so on. I found that it was much easier to spend time practicing these as skills, and then apply them in our work. When I modeled and encouraged quick ways to sketch, students were more successful in their own sketchnoting. I also recommend developing a class dictionary of the sketches and fonts that you have practiced. This reminds students of quick skills that they already know how to use.
