Truth Four

There is no substitute for hard work and there never will be.

In the early days of my music career, I spent a decent amount of time wishing I’d get a big, old, appearing-on-my-doorstep break. Hoping success would come in some magical way, or that maybe I’d discover some hidden talent I didn’t know I had, but when I found it, would set me up for life.

Financially at least. (Oh, just wait for Truth Five.)

I mean, I understood that I’d have to do some work, but with the magically delivered talent and/or break I figured it wouldn’t be hard work.

Eventually, I did get a break.

The break was learning that hard work, and I mean hard work, is an integral part of success.

Actual success.

The kind that leads to happiness.

Not the viral YouTube video kind.

Side story.

I once interviewed a girl for a job who made sure to let me know she had a viral video on YouTube, which, I’m assuming, she believed was something I should seriously factor into my decision whether or not to hire her.

The video?

A dog trying to pull off her bikini.

Millions of views.

And, no surprise here, I thought, Why wouldn’t I hire someone with millions of views from people who clicked on a video to see a dog try and pull off a girl’s bikini?

While times they are a-changing, this Truth won’t ever change: It takes hard work to achieve anything of value.

True success can never and will never be handed to you for free.

Turns out that even if you do have some hidden, awesome talent, you still have to work your ass off to be successful with it.

You can’t remove hard work from success.

Hard work and success are inextricably bound and we’ll be a lot happier when we just accept that this Truth is, well, true.

Take a long, hard look at a few realities.

First reality: by trying to avoid the stress of hard work, you’ll cause yourself even more stress.

In other words, you’ll miss out on some good times if you try to cut corners, search for hacks, or sit in your house waiting for happiness and success to magically appear. You’ll never know what it feels like to earn what you want or the happiness that comes from even trying to get it.

Second reality: You can’t really relax until you’ve earned relaxation.
