In the Land of the Grandmother

The next few days after the battle were spent burying the dead, marking the areas where they had fallen, and preparing to scatter in different directions. Generals Gibbon and Crook were approaching.

Tatanka Iyotake told his friend Crazy Horse that he was going to take the Hunkpapa north to the land of the Grandmother, as the Lakota called Canada. He asked his friend to accompany him. Crazy Horse said he would decoy south and catch up to Tatanka Iyotake before he entered into Canada. The two friends never saw each other again in this life.

After parting from Crazy Horse, Tatanka Iyotake and his followers traveled north toward Canada. The people consisted of 135 lodges headed for the medicine line (the Canadian border). They altered their direction, and at times backtracked to confuse any pursuers, and they hoped for Crazy Horse to catch up to them.
