CHAPTER TWELVE

YOU’RE GORGEOUS WHEN you’re stabbing things, Roxy Tam.

Dagan thought she was gorgeous? Roxy hated the little surge of pleasure his words evoked. Almost as much as she hated the way her lips still tingled and her pulse still raced. The taste of him was on her tongue, and she wanted more.

“Fuck you,” she muttered.

“Love to oblige. It’s been a while. But this hardly seems the time or place.” His gaze raked her, sending her thoughts spinning all kinds of places they had no business going. Then he leaned over and flicked off the light, cloaking them in darkness. The air stirred as he moved, shadow on shadow, his arm brushing hers. “Unless you’re a fan of having an audience.”

She pressed her lips together, willing herself to be silent.

“Define a while.” Damn. She just had to go and ask. Why was she doing this? Baiting him? It was like stepping into a lion’s cage, hugging an armload of raw steak. Even if she dropped the steak, she’d still be lion bait, covered in blood.

Again, that low laugh. Like sin.

“Longer than a month, less than a decade.”

Well, that told her a fat lot of nothing. His words made images flash through her thoughts—skin to hot skin, his hips flush with hers, clothes on, then clothes off, bump and grind. Damn, why did she have the urge to end his dry spell?

Actually, she knew exactly why.

Because for the past eleven years he’d been the main feature in her x-rated girlie version of a wet dream. And for the past eleven seconds she’d had her tongue down his throat and it’d been far better than anything she’d fantasized about. What she really wanted to do was forget whatever was out there, whatever was coming for her, and focus on him, focus on now, rip his shirt open, flatten her palms against his chest, open her mouth on his skin, sink her teeth in his flesh as he pushed inside her.

She didn’t have words for how that made her feel. Pissed off. At him. At herself. Embarrassed. Wary. So she changed the subject.

“What’s out there?”

“Nothing good. And there’s more than one.”

Roxy opened her senses and reached for the unknown. Energy crackled through her like a half dozen cans of Red Bull hitting her system all at once, prickling and dancing and leaving the fine hairs on her arms standing upright. The something that was out there was moving in fast, and it was definitely more than just one something.

“Have you gone up against a supernatural before?” He paused. “Other than me?” Definitely amusement in his tone. Probably because she’d just been plastered against him about as up close as she could get. Or because she hadn’t exactly gone up against him the first time they met. More like sat there and let him happen to her.

“I’ve taken on a few Topworlders with a hint of supernatural.” None of them any stronger than Frank Marin. And, like him, they hadn’t proved much of a challenge. “Once, a lesser demon who works as an enforcer for Hades.
