On October 1, La Galissonnière, Triomphante and D’Estaing dropped anchor in the Tamsui roadstead. After he had consulted with the com mander of the gunboat Vipère and had been briefed, Rear Admiral Lespès set the attack for the following day. Lespès made sure to inform the commander of Cockchafer of his intentions. Since the information about the planned landing was sent by open signal code, the Chinese were also forewarned. Unwilling to wait idly for events to unfold, at dawn on October 2, the Chinese forces opened fire at the French warships, which were anchored 15-18 cables from their positions (2.6-3.3 km).
