Exercise I: THE TONGUE BACK

.Open your mouth to the hanging jaw position (no bigger!), and extend the tongue. Push it out beyond your bottom lip (unless your tongue is really short, in which case you should adjust the exercise) and, if necessary, hold onto it with a finger.

.So that you can get used to this position, make some noises. Remember to use the silent laugh to avoid constriction.

.Keep the tongue extended. Starting on an easy pitch, sing an octave leap on ‘AH’ /a:/. The vowel will sound a little strange, but that doesn't matter. Notice if the tip of your tongue is pulling back as you go up in pitch; gently monitor the tongue tip with your finger to prevent this. Alternatively, you could use a mirror. If you are doing this correctly, you will notice that the back of the tongue bunches up as you slide up to the high notes. Most of your larynx is suspended from the tongue via the hyoid bone. Raising the back of the tongue will give you easier access to the high notes.

.Work your way up through your range, bringing in any other adjustments such as anchoring or thyroid tilting as you need them. Work this exercise until you can do it without discomfort.

.Once you have reached the top of your range, start to descend, still singing on AH’ /a:/. Gradually take your finger away (or stop watching in the mirror), and withdraw the tongue to its normal positioning inside the mouth. The back of the tongue will still rise for the high notes.
