Chapter Thirty-nine
Ella
Although heâd sounded perfectly pleasant on the phone Ella didnât know who was going to be walking through the door early on that frosty morning. Sheâd realised after theyâd spoke that there were no pictures of Dan on Danâs Painting, so she was surprised when a tall man with dark blonde hair worn in a bun and a full beard appeared. His warm smile reached his blue/grey eyes.
âMorning.â
âHi, Iâm Ella, you must be Dan.â
Clara loitered near the back, keeping an eye on the stranger whoâd entered the shop. Sheâd volunteered to come in early when sheâd heard that Ella had arranged for a painter to come and give a quote. Not that she didnât trust him, but he could be anyone for all they knew, and you could never be too careful.
Ella showed Dan around the shop and asked him to quote for painting the shop floor and the frontage.
âThe thing is we donât have a huge amount of budget.â
âDonât worry, choose your colour and Iâll see what I can do. There are paints suitable for all budgets.â
Ella felt reassured. Dan seemed really nice and of course sheâd already checked out his work. He was hugely popular on social media.
âThe only thing I should mention is that thereâs a bit of a wait for when I can fit you in. Iâm currently booking in January jobs. So, if you do want to go ahead, let me know as soon as possible. Iâll have a quote sent over by the end of the day.â
After Dan had left the shop Ella and Clara held a discussion on who to give the job to.
âWell, he seemed really nice Ella!â
âI know! Like he really cares for the work he does. Remember that other guy that came by, remember how he didnât really seem bothered if he got the job or not. I donât know, Iâve got a good feeling about Dan. And as he canât start work until January that will give us time to raise the money if heâs massively more expensive than the other quotes.â
âIâm not saying go with the most expensive, but I think he comes across as trustworthy and someone we can work with. Just say yes Ella!â
âIâm glad we agree!â
The two appointments that day yielded two good sales and during a lull in the dayâs proceedings the two women began scouring the internet looking for wedding dress shop inspiration to pass onto the decorator.
âThis is it! This is the one. Blush pink is gorgeous against pale/golden wood flooring,â Ella pointed at her phone screen excitedly.
âOoh yes, that is so pretty, and I love the velvet green and gold chairs!â
Ellaâs shoulders slumped. âThey are gorgeous, but we donât have the funds for them.â
âMabe not right now...â Clara conceded. âBut maybe one day.â
Ella thought that it sounded like Clara was happy to stay at Luciâs Bridal Boutique for the foreseeable, but she was concerned about what would happen when Luciana returned. Would she keep her on? Would Ella be let
