Chapter Thirty-nine

Ella

Although he’d sounded perfectly pleasant on the phone Ella didn’t know who was going to be walking through the door early on that frosty morning. She’d realised after they’d spoke that there were no pictures of Dan on Dan’s Painting, so she was surprised when a tall man with dark blonde hair worn in a bun and a full beard appeared. His warm smile reached his blue/grey eyes.

‘Morning.’

‘Hi, I’m Ella, you must be Dan.’

Clara loitered near the back, keeping an eye on the stranger who’d entered the shop. She’d volunteered to come in early when she’d heard that Ella had arranged for a painter to come and give a quote. Not that she didn’t trust him, but he could be anyone for all they knew, and you could never be too careful.

Ella showed Dan around the shop and asked him to quote for painting the shop floor and the frontage.

‘The thing is we don’t have a huge amount of budget.’

‘Don’t worry, choose your colour and I’ll see what I can do. There are paints suitable for all budgets.’

Ella felt reassured. Dan seemed really nice and of course she’d already checked out his work. He was hugely popular on social media.

‘The only thing I should mention is that there’s a bit of a wait for when I can fit you in. I’m currently booking in January jobs. So, if you do want to go ahead, let me know as soon as possible. I’ll have a quote sent over by the end of the day.’

After Dan had left the shop Ella and Clara held a discussion on who to give the job to.

‘Well, he seemed really nice Ella!’

‘I know! Like he really cares for the work he does. Remember that other guy that came by, remember how he didn’t really seem bothered if he got the job or not. I don’t know, I’ve got a good feeling about Dan. And as he can’t start work until January that will give us time to raise the money if he’s massively more expensive than the other quotes.’

‘I’m not saying go with the most expensive, but I think he comes across as trustworthy and someone we can work with. Just say yes Ella!’

‘I’m glad we agree!’

The two appointments that day yielded two good sales and during a lull in the day’s proceedings the two women began scouring the internet looking for wedding dress shop inspiration to pass onto the decorator.

‘This is it! This is the one. Blush pink is gorgeous against pale/golden wood flooring,’ Ella pointed at her phone screen excitedly.

‘Ooh yes, that is so pretty, and I love the velvet green and gold chairs!’

Ella’s shoulders slumped. ‘They are gorgeous, but we don’t have the funds for them.’

‘Mabe not right now...’ Clara conceded. ‘But maybe one day.’

Ella thought that it sounded like Clara was happy to stay at Luci’s Bridal Boutique for the foreseeable, but she was concerned about what would happen when Luciana returned. Would she keep her on? Would Ella be let
