Dreaming of spring: Weeks before winter ends, spring graces the covers of catalogs and magazines, and these flowers appearing in our mailboxes and on newsstands make us long for the change of the seasons. Then, seemingly overnight, color. Yellow is often the first hue, chasing the cold and darkness away as the forsythia, daffodil and crocus awaken. Watch for the freshest flowers coming into florists and grocers; you’ll be delighted one day to be greeted by new pastel splashes of the tulip, muscari, hyacinth and lilac. Lining the streets, budding maple, hickory, oak, birch and catalpa further announce spring’s arrival. Cut a blossoming dogwood branch; inside, you can watch it develop for further inspiration. We’ll start with the simplest of seasonal arrangements—lily of the valley. Then, throughout the year, we’ll move on to more advanced designs. Bouquets, like the oldest of friends, always share something new, even when you’ve spent time with them many times before. In this time of birth, of great rejuvenation, with the temperature and scent of the air changing, we are both one with the past and with the new year’s daybreak.
