Bryce (Age 18)

The music was pumping, alcohol was flowing, teenagers were all over the small castle, and the old lady who owned it was tucked away in her room for the night, leaving her grandson, Bagsy, to run the party of the century. It wasn’t her best idea but seeing how he had her wrapped around his chubby little finger, he could do whatever he pleased and being the king of the castle pleased him very much.

Drinking cola, rather than alcohol like most of the guests, Bryce scanned the main hall before attempting to head through the fog made by a smoke machine. He managed to reach the hallway, which could have easily been mistaken for a hotel foyer, if it weren’t for the large family portraits hanging high on the walls. Their disapproving eyes seemed to follow him, giving him the creeps and helping him to make the decision to find the kitchen.

The noise wasn’t much better in there, neither was the scene. Marcus was twirling a vodka bottle as though he were auditioning for some sort of circus act, and the giggling girls surrounding him were one step away from throwing their knickers in his face. Of course, Marcus was all over them too, only ignoring the couple locking lips against the sink.

A bottle slipped from the cocktail barman wannabe, smashed everywhere, and was kicked to one side, because nobody cared enough to tidy that mess.

Bryce pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes for a moment, taking a breath from the chaos. When he opened them, Luke was in his firing line, and the lad looked as though he had just witnessed the devil in person.

Yeah, you better be worried, because if I find out you’ve come here with Lexi, I’m gonna bust your face open again.

Bryce narrowed his eyes as the memory of his fight with Luke the previous year made an appearance. He sort of regretted his actions that day, but found it hard to regret something that he would do over if need be. He really couldn’t help himself. Seeing Luke’s coat draped over Lexi’s shoulders in the school grounds pushed him further over the edge than he thought possible. Even he didn’t know he was capable of that much anger igniting at such speed.

Poor Luke twitched in the kitchen doorway as he tried to avoid eye contact with Bryce, and Bryce couldn’t blame the lad. A part of him wanted to go over and apologise, as he hadn’t spoken to him since that day, but he didn’t want to back down from his powerful place, and he was worried Lexi might walk in and see them making up and wonder why.

The decision was taken from him when Luke walked right past him to get to the hallway, and, for a second, Bryce did wonder if the lad was going to smack him one. He was ready, just in case.

Lottie gained his attention by draping her arms over his shoulders whilst trying to pour straight gin into his mouth.
