Chapter 12

ARE DISOBEDIENT CHRISTIANS UNDER GOD’S WRATH?

PART II: POSITION IN CHRIST

Tom Stegall

While propitiation for all sin has already been accomplished by Christ, the Bible teaches that this propitiation applies only to those who are positionally in Christ. Thus, propitiation, like real estate, is all about location, location, location! Propitiation in the person of Christ (1 John 2:2; 4:10) applies to every believer at the moment of initial faith in Christ. At that moment, the believer is permanently positioned “in Christ” by the baptism of the Holy Spirit, as 1 Corinthians 12:13 states, “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body”—the body of Christ, with Him as the spiritual Head. Once a believer is brought into spiritual union with Christ, that new believer receives all spiritual blessings in Christ by the riches of God’s grace (Eph. 1:3, 7). These salvation blessings are integrally connected to the believer’s position in Christ, as Chafer states, “All spiritual blessing is secured by the Christian’s position in Christ.” 1 Several of these salvation blessings, including propitiation, are treated in this chapter to show that the believer’s identification with Christ and position in Him resolves a number of misconceptions and theological imbalances regarding the relationship between God’s wrath and the believer. In addition to propitiation, some of these blessings “in Christ” include: possessing peace with God, being brought near to God, having Christ’s righteousness, redemption, and reconciliation. John Walvoord explains how reconciliation, like all other salvation blessings, relates to the believer today: “The believer who comes into the position of being in Christ through faith and through the baptism of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13) thus is reconciled to God because God sees him in Christ.” 2
