I released the flesh I’d nipped and then ground my mouth hard against his, bruising the small bite. I tasted a coppery hint of blood and felt a surge of triumph. I leaned into him, raked his chest lightly with my nails before gripping the fabric of his shirt in my fists and jerking it tight.

I kissed him like I hated him and wanted to make him suffer, and he laughed, a low, dark sound. It sent a shiver down my spine and made my sex contract, and that pissed me off even more.

“Promising.” Eli spoke against my lips.

“Promise this.” I released his shirt and went for the thin braids that framed his face winding them around my hands and giving them a sharp tug. He laughed again and I thrust my tongue into his mouth while I bucked my pelvis against his. I poured all my frustrated fury into action and it felt good but it wasn’t enough.

I loosened my hold on Eli’s braids and let them slide through my hands. Then I gripped his shirt just inside the collar, above the top button, and pulled hard. The button popped off. I tore his shirt open by stages while I ate at his mouth. The buttons rained across the kitchen’s linoleum floor, each one adding its soft percussive rhythm to the others, making a sound like encouragement. Once I had the shirt open, I jerked it down his shoulders. Then I wound my legs around Eli’s thighs and clung, all lips and hands and angry heat.

The icy blade at the back of my neck stopped me. I let out a low hiss and let Eli’s lower lip slide free of my mouth. “You could’ve just said stop.”

“Get off my son.” The voice wasn’t Eli’s. It was deep, masculine, and coming from behind me.

I shut my eyes and groaned. “You have got to be kidding me.” The interruption was not welcome. Maybe I hadn’t found a crack in Eli’s control, but any kiss that ended in missing or damaged clothing and skin-to-skin contact couldn’t be considered a failure.

The blade bit into the skin, a sharper warning, and I yelped. “Okay, okay.” I stayed as still as I could to avoid hurting myself by moving into the weapon I couldn’t see but damn well felt. “Please move whatever that is far enough back that I can let go without beheading myself in the process.”

“One less demon in the world.” I didn’t hear any regret or hesitation in the voice over the prospect.

“So I don’t get any points for being polite and cooperative? How is that fair?” I heaved a sigh and very slowly let my legs slide down Eli’s, one at a time, more from a desire to prolong my afterlife than to prolong the contact.

When my feet touched the floor I carefully loosened my grip on what was left of his shirt and put my empty hands out to the sides, palms up. The cold sharp object went away, but it left a chill behind.
