THE FIRST EVENING OF the company retreat was a meet-and-greet cocktail reception. After settling into the hotel, Helen and her boss, Jack, went to the reception, collecting their name badges at the registration table before going through.

More than one head turned as Helen and Jack walked through the door. It wasn’t just because they happened to know Jack, either.

True, he was well-known in the industry, let alone in their own company, and often travelled to other offices to give presentations.

But the other side of it was that people were clearly eyeing him up from head to toe. Helen actually saw one woman spill her drink because she was too busy admiring Jack to pay attention to the glass in her hand.

Jack had that effect. If you were into the whole arrogant, sexy-smoulder thing, anyway.

Which I am absolutely not, Helen told herself. Her relationship with Jack had always been very professional. She would never do anything to hurt Ben, and Jack wasn’t the sort to get involved with people in the office, anyway.

Plus, neither of us are each other’s type, Helen thought. He wasn’t anything like Ben. Ben epitomized her type: sweet, thoughtful, kind, caring. She was certain she wasn’t Jack’s type, either.

Though, come to think of it, she wasn’t sure who was Jack’s “type.” She couldn’t remember ever having a personal conversation with the guy.

“Richard! Great to see you,” Jack said then as an older man shook his hand. Jack introduced him to Helen as one of the bigwigs in the head office.

She was pleased to make a good impression on Richard, since up until now, she’d only known him by name. Richard stayed with them for a while, giving Helen a little thrill. Being known to him would open up the doors even more for her career.

Some time later, a woman approached and tapped Richard on the shoulder. Richard turned and his face clouded when he saw her. He nodded at her and abruptly ended his conversation with Jack and Helen.

“Good to see you, Jack. Wonderful to meet you, Helen. Thank you for being part of our team. If you’ll excuse me,” Richard said, shaking their hands once more before walking away with the woman steering his arm.

The exchange between them was so peculiar that Helen stood on tiptoe to whisper in Jack’s ear, not wanting the people around them to hear her impertinent question. “Is that his ex-wife?”

“Worse,” Jack murmured back, “it’s his ex-business partner.”

She winced. Oof.

Helen had seen the complications that could come from having a divorce in a romantic relationship, but she’d also heard second-hand about the messiness of their company’s head honcho business partnership breakup. It might have happened five years ago, but it had been such a complete and utter disaster that the story still circulated from time to time.

“What is she doing here?”

“She still has some ties to the company—it’s complicated,” Jack shrugged. Helen looked at him shrewdly and guessed that he wasn’t entirely sure about the situation, himself.

Unfortunately for Helen, Jack intercepted the glance.
