Chapter 21

The next morning, over breakfast, Jack and Sofia told William and Marian about their evening with the artists.

‘You might have heard of them, Dad. The Meldrumites. They learned their methods from a man called Max Meldrum years ago. They are very good. They even get write-ups in The Bulletin.’

‘The Meldrumites!’ William blustered, shock evident in his voice. ‘Everybody has heard about the Meldrumites. The papers were full of them. It was a couple of years ago now. Tied up in some murder. A terrible to-do. A young woman’s body found, not too far from here.’ William dropped his voice, his next comment for Jack’s ears only. ‘Her boyfriend was a prime suspect – some artistic type who had not one, but two, women. The case went on for weeks. All everyone could talk about was the Meldrumites and their depraved lifestyle.’

Jack was shocked, but disbelieving, insisting that the people they had met were nothing like this. Families. Married. Their children also artists. Very respectable.

‘That must be another group, Dad. Justus can’t be the only one of Max’s students who has set up a Meldrumite art school.’

It could be the only answer, Jack thought, and his parents agreed, somewhat doubtfully. What did they know about the art world?
