CHRISTIAN USES OF JONAH IN CARE OF BELIEVERS, THEOLOGY, AND CONFLICTS WITH RIVALS

Christian authors found in the Jonah saga a storehouse of lessons for the faithful, grounds for an intriguing theological proposition, and an armory of arguments, defensive and offensive, with which to contend against foes. In the churches’ deployments of Jonah treated in this section, the three elements—pastoral, doctrinal, and apologetic—will often be intertwined. Christianity, like its religious competitors in the late Roman period, was required to support its adherents, build and tend its belief system, and both defend and advance the truths that gave the community its definition and identity. It will not be surprising to see a thread running through these writings and being applied in quite different ways—namely, extensions of Matthew’s added interpretation that enabled Jesus Christ as a saved savior to be represented in Jonah.
