TWENTY

He looked into those gorgeous eyes, even when he knew better, because yes, this woman had the power to change his mind. Danger had chased them all the way here, and as they got closer to the truth, the danger was increasing incrementally. They might not survive the next attack.

“Chad is going to take you someplace safe,” he said. “I texted Chief Long that I wanted you to be protected and asked her to call me. I’m not going to just leave you without protection.”

“No.”

He studied her, searching for a way to make her understand. He hadn’t known her long, but he knew that he more than liked her. He was drawn to her strength in adversity, and his heart ached for what she’d been through.

“I can see those wheels in your mind turning,” she said. “I get it. But we’re here now. Like it or not, we’re here on the island with the Mountain of Death. This isn’t your town or island. Or even your state. This isn’t Montana.” Hands in an iron-fisted grip of his collar, she tugged him closer. Her face was millimeters from his. Heat and desperation spilled from her. “I can’t deal with another person I care about getting hurt. You are not going to the mountain without me.”

He fought a smile. He liked her spunk. But her words had him searching her eyes, gripping her arms.

“Another person I care about.”

He saw the truth of it in her eyes, but he didn’t know what to do with it. “I guess we’ll just have to see how it plays out.”

She nearly sagged against him in relief. “And we’re talking to Chad first. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. I’m sure you’re a great investigator, but this is personal for you, and that changes everything.”

Yes, yes, it does. He couldn’t see straight for his anger. But he had to stop letting that get in the way.

She smiled and stood on her tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek, then turned to unlock her door. He got the feeling she was trying to rush, but she fumbled with the key before finally opening it. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

Carrie shut the door.

He stared at it and smiled. That kiss had suddenly infused him with energy when he really needed to rest. This could definitely be another sleepless night.

The next morning, after Carrie and Trevor had breakfast at Kolinski’s Koffee, they headed for the marina. Trevor maintained situational awareness, making sure they were still here alone and no one had followed them. Though the transponder had been turned off, this small town was located on the island with Jacob’s Mountain. They were closing in on the source of danger. He could feel it in his bones, and that put him on edge. At the end of the block, he peered around the corner. No one suspicious looking drew his attention. They crossed to the next block where he led her to the back of the buildings, stepping around the bear-safe garbage bins and occasional parked vehicle.
