Chapter Fifteen

“Ouch,” I whined and rubbed my cheek, but the weight on my chest eased. “That hurt.”

Alex glared at Sterlyn; his fangs descended as his vampire side bled through.

Sterlyn ignored him, still leaning over me with her hair hanging around her face. Her sweet, musky, floral scent and calm demeanor, now back in place, eased some of my panic. She looked normal, like the woman I’d known for almost a month.

She scanned me over. “I’m sorry, but you were spiraling. I wasn’t sure what else to do.”

“You didn’t have to hit her that hard,” Alex hissed, his words nearly indistinguishable. “You’re a silver wolf, for crying out loud.”

“It’s fine.” She had hit me hard, but I had a feeling she’d held back. I moved my jaw from side to side to work out the dull ache.

“You hit a member of the royal vampire family,” Matthew said with disgust, rushing past the unconscious shifter to my side as if he cared. “You cannot do that. There are consequences for such actions.”

Now he wanted to feign concern when it worked in his favor. “She did it to help me. No punishment needed.” I stood and walked to Alex’s other side, refusing to remain beside the traitor.

Alex brushed his fingertips across my cheek, and I winced. “I get that it snapped you out of your state, but we could’ve tried softer ways first.”

I captured his hand in mine as a chill ran down my spine. “Believe me, snapping me out of that quickly was the softest way.” Remembering what had caused me to spiral, I turned to Azbogah.

Thankfully, the shadow was gone, but Azbogah’s nose wrinkled with disgust.

Had I imagined the shadow?

“The girl isn’t suited for this world,” Azbogah said. “And Sterlyn and Griffin are losing control over the shifters.”

“That’s not true,” Griffin growled, squatting next to the man dressed in black. “Nothing like this has happened before.”

“Really?” Azbogah arched an eyebrow. “Nothing? What about all those shifter attacks not even three months ago? Several of them targeted your mate.”

I wanted to yell setup, but I kept my mouth shut. To outwit egotistical asshole men, you couldn’t come at them head on, not at first. It was best to make their story crumble around them, then kick them between the legs.

“Dick and Saga were behind those attacks. I sincerely doubt they planned this one.” Glowering, Griffin grabbed the bottom of the guy’s mask and pulled it off his face. “Dammit, this is one of the panthers.”

The man had thin, luminous black hair and scruff that complemented his dark olive skin. His face was sharp and angular, reminding me of a cat. He was stunning, even though, in my eyes, he didn’t hold a candle to Alex.

Matthew straightened and waved a finger around. “You put Dick in charge.”

“Are we going to stand around and continue this pissing match?” Sterlyn gestured to the unconscious man. “Because Griffin’s and my time could be put to better use by questioning the guy to learn why they attacked.”

“So, you don’t know.
