Violence and Gender Violence: Elements of Patriarchy

As Americans, we tend to hold a nebulous viewpoint on violence. We cheer vehemently when hockey players end up fighting on the ice, and we’ve become complacent to rape and murder because they are not uncommon. Violence is used to precipitate laughter in children’s cartoons, and in some forms of comedy. Boys and men, particularly young men, are the most likely victims and perpetrators of violence.

Females are often exploited, abused, and harmed. Both girls and women are sold into sex trafficking, raped, and murdered—crimes motivated by gender and sexuality.33 Most violence between males and females is sexual in nature, such as harassment, assault, and rape. Sexual and gender-based harassment in schools is rife, and boys either engage in it or comply with it.34 Numerous research studies have shown that males who are violent towards females tend to endorse traditional and patriarchal views of male power, stereotypical gender roles, male supremacy, and misogyny.
