Chapter 6

Advice for Beginners

Having sex for the first time can be an exciting and nervous experience full of anticipation. It involves a wide range of emotions. Once you become familiar with sex, even if on a basic level, you will begin to learn what brings you and your partner pleasure. It could be through a certain touch or sensation. Try to see how your lover reacts when you kiss or touch them in certain away. One of the most important ways to ease into sexual intimacy is through a gentle session of foreplay. This can be subtle, beginning with light kissing and touching, showing and exchanging signs of affection. During this phase, you may notice a decrease in anxiety and begin to experience signs of arousal. An erection is one of the initial signs in men, while women may feel their labia engorge and swell.

There may be slight wetness or moistening in the genital area, as well as heightened sensitivity to touch and sound. During this phase, the mutual attraction intensifies, which creates a transition to sex.

The Challenges of Sexual Education in Society

In many cultures and societies, sex education is considered taboo and avoided as much as possible. Even in countries where there is a more relaxed approach to the concept of sex and where it is introduced into the education system or tackled within the family, there still exists a gap between learning the fundamentals of biology and how to experience the pleasures of sexual activity. Sex education in most schools, for example, centers on the prevention of STIs (sexually transmitted infections), the concept of sexual arousal, and how the reproductive system works. In some progressive school systems, the curriculum has a broader spectrum of education to include all sexual orientations. These schools also have a more accepting approach to sexual and gender identity. However, there still exists a significant amount of resistance against a general openness to sexuality, and people are not generally taught how to enjoy and seek pleasure during sex.

Some family and marital arrangements have a heavy reliance on traditional practices that hold on to strict male and female roles. They place a more dominant role on men, with the expectation that women will always be sexually compliant and available even when there is no explicit consent. This power dynamic places men in a more commanding position where women’s sexual needs and wants are suppressed.

On the other hand, men are expected to take on a traditional “leadership” role, which doesn’t come with the goal of giving women pleasure or helping them achieve pleasure together as a couple. In relationships where there is both a lack of sexual education and mutual connection, sexual intimacy can be a major challenge, often done out of necessity and starting a family. Thus, it is less about pleasure and pleasing each other.

As some people break away from their traditional roles in marriage and intimate relationships, they realize there is much to learn from each other, especially on how to express their desires, bond with each other, and experience the joy of sex together.
