Conclusion

Just as Judeans negotiated Rome’s power and presence in quite different ways, so too did Jesus-believers. People often employed multiple strategies at the same time to make their way in Rome’s world.

People wear it as jewelry. Businesses use it as part of their logo. It appears on clothing. People sing about it. Churches display it openly. The cross is the symbol of the Christian tradition. Do other symbols of execution, of carrying out the death penalty—swords, guillotines, gallows, electric chair, syringes—have such widespread and popular use?

Our fifth key event concerns the crucifixion of Jesus in about 30 CE. The word “about” is important. As surprising as it may seem, we do not know for sure the precise date of this central event in the Christian tradition. We do, though, have a window within which Jesus’s crucifixion had to have happened. We know it was when Pilate was Roman governor of Judea, which puts us between 26 and 37 CE. Within that period of time, we cannot be any more precise. So ca. 30 CE is a nice round number. The “ca.” in front of the 30 is an abbreviation for the Latin word circa, which means “about” or “approximately.” So ca. 30 CE signals “about 30 CE.”[47]
