Three curled on his side, holding Four close. The pain in his head had receded to the ports in his temples, but those would be sore for days. They always were after a deep brain ECT.

Four petted him from cheek to neck. There was too much worry in Four’s eyes, and none of it was for himself.

Do you think he will kill us? His hands formed the words his voice couldn’t. Three preferred to talk mind to mind with Four, but the collar around Three’s neck wouldn’t allow it. It didn’t matter, Three learned Four’s special sign language years ago. So many years. He’d been full of anger then, but somehow Four soothed the vicious beast in his chest.

“I don’t think so. Nine promised me it wasn’t in our future.” He might have doubted his twin if he wasn’t off grid, but out there in the nothing, he couldn’t lie. It was the only reason Three was willing to risk Four and help Nine.

What now?

“We wait.” It was all they could do. If Nine succeeded, Sub Floor would be exposed and all the Others would be free. Three longed for the day he could see the sun again. Before he’d met Four, he was one of the few privileged allowed outside the walls and electric fencing. Stone held his leash then. He controlled Three with praise and promises of a profitable future. Three ate lavish meals in fancy restaurants, wore the best clothing, had an apartment, strings of women at his beck and call. Then he’d fallen in love with Four and none of those things mattered.

He pushed the hair back from Four’s eyes. Gentle eyes, so full of kindness and admiration. Three still didn’t understand how the man could love him. Three was a tool of destruction and chaos and never fought against the commands given to him to destroy innocent lives.

Don’t think about the past.

It was impossible not to. The past was part of his life. It’s what birthed him into this world. Bloodshed and violence were his parents.

“I don’t want to lose you.”

You won’t.

“I can’t let him take me away from you again.”

If Nine promised then he’ll make it happen.

“I want us to have a house.” Three fingered a golden lock of Four’s hair. “Somewhere quiet. You can have your plants and your animals.” And Three would have his sanity. He’d find peace in Four’s arms.

He held Four tighter. A wave of worry and concern rippled through Three’s thoughts. Four was always worried and concerned. As an empath, it was his gift and his curse.

“What are you thinking about?”

You didn’t hurt him, did you?

“Seven?”

He nodded.

“No. No, I didn’t hurt him.”

What happened?

“I went after him, and he stopped me.”

How?

“I’m not sure, to tell you the truth. One minute he was right there in front of me surrounded by the hounds, the next minute he was gone.”

Gone?

“Completely gone.” Three caressed Four’s cheek with his finger. “It’s weird. When I was right there with him, I couldn’t see his next move.
