The First Medicine Wheel

I was living in Payson, Arizona, at the time, and the forest fires surrounded my town. The biggest fire in Arizona history was burning out of control only fifteen miles from my house. Mother Earth told me and my family to make a medicine wheel on our land and to pray for rain.

We did this in a sacred way, speaking to each stone, seeing it as alive, and at the end Mother Earth spoke through me to my whole family and said that it would rain in two days.

The next day, the sky was filled with moisture. The local newspaper headlines called it the “Miracle Day,” because the moisture went straight into the fires. The rain turned the smoke from black to white and allowed the firefighters to get a 5 percent hold on this completely out-of-control megafire. It was the beginning of the end for this fire.

The following day, it began to rain lightly, but only in this area around Payson. Slowly, each day, it began to rain more and more until the Payson area was wet with water and the fires were extinguished. The medicine wheel was working, but unfortunately only near my home. The fires continued elsewhere in the Four Corners, and so the problem was not solved. But this medicine wheel was superimportant, as it began the healing that would be completed by our international group and the special talents they were to bring to this Native area from all over the world.

Mother Earth wanted me to go into all four states of the Four Corners—Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah—and perform ceremony to heal this relationship between the Ancient Ones and the Modern Ones, all humans alive today. In so doing, the outer and inner worlds could come into balance, and simultaneously a block on a portion of the Unity Consciousness Grid would disappear.
