'Ang is a totally refreshing, unburdened source of energy in our lives and can pull me out of a funk instantly.'

On the flip side, however, Ang is different to me in such impactful ways. While I have certainly become more open-minded and less structured than I was in my law days, my natural tendency is back in that direction, and I revert to my childhood drama queen and take life far too seriously. Ang is a totally refreshing, unburdened source of energy in our lives and can pull me out of a funk instantly. While she and I are alike when it comes to celebrating the small things and getting over-excited about new possibilities, she is so different in areas I want to emulate. This keeps the inner child alive in both Nic and me. Anytime we’re at risk of starting to feel old and weary as we advance in our thirties, Ang will hit us with a streamer-and-balloon-filled room for our birthday or waltz into a meeting in a carrot costume. And she’s at pains to help me with my blooper posts, collecting the ugliest photos of my face that exist and sending them to me whenever I need a good giggle or a pull back down to earth.

Another person who has had an eye-opening and horizon-expanding impact on me is my dear friend, Samantha Gash. Again, we are similar in many ways – namely the ones that first drew our attention to each other. We would obnoxiously answer all the questions in our law lectures, later forming a hardcore two-person study group. But we are also completely different in many ways, namely my conservative, comfort-driven former self and Samantha’s thirst for the crazy and impossible. While my extracurricular undertakings at uni involved exchanges to Paris, Samantha volunteered on death row in the United States and made her first moves into the world of ultramarathon running. She was a complete non-runner back then, mind you.

One of her ways to show love for her friends is to push them completely out of their comfort zones, whether they can appreciate the value of that at the time or not. One of the first real camping experiences of my life was in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where I joined her support crew for a 220-kilometre ultramarathon between the two highest roads in the world. I attribute so much of my tolerance and even passion for discomfort to Samantha and the influence of her friendship over the years. Coming back to the area of self-doubt, while some friends reassure me with a girly chat or a hug, Samantha reassures me by example.

Samantha continually defies the meaning of impossible by embarking on challenges that have literally never been done before. She can also cut the fluff and tell things to me straight when I need that, too. Watching her walk away from law a few years before me to embark on a career as an elite endurance athlete was a huge influence on me and informed my decision to take the jump.
