“Are you serious? We’re in the nightlife capital of the world and you take me here?”

We walked into a dive bar, the smell of cigarette smoke, old beer, and cheap candy-flavored shots hitting us in the face.

“I’m sorry. I’m morally opposed to any establishment with Route 66 paraphernalia on the walls,” Ethan continued, turning toward the door.

“Don’t be such a snob!” I said, grabbing him by the arm and yanking him back inside. “I’m morally opposed to a run-in with my boyfriend tonight, so we can’t go anywhere trendy.”

“You will tell me what that’s all about, right?”

“Of course,” I replied, leading him to the bar. “But first stop, drinks.”

I was half a bottle of wine down when Ethan arrived at my apartment in an Uber, so I wasn’t exactly short on social lubrication. But the desire to drink myself into a stupor was still the only solution I had to my life problems, so I needed a double shot of something strong, pronto.

“Two tequila shots,” I said to the bartender, pointing two fingers in the air for emphasis.

“I thought I was taking your pint virginity tonight?”

Even through my liquid confidence, I felt my cheeks flush at the V word. I turned the other way before Ethan could see. “Beer will not get me on that,” I said, pointing to the dance floor. “And I need a good dance tonight.”

“Oh Christ.” Ethan passed me my shot, taking his own and looking at it like it was a tiny glass full of regrets. “Bottoms up then.”

We licked, shot and sucked, slamming the glasses down on the bar before ordering a round of G&Ts and heading for a booth in the corner. We had a great position there, private, but with a view of the entire bar. I decided early in the night I wasn’t going to look at my phone and stuffed it into my handbag. Out of sight, out of mind.

The music was a combination of old classics, and songs from my youth that were also considered old classics. Ahh, the joy of edging toward middle age. Regardless, I bopped along, enjoying bangers by Rhianna, ACDC, and Madonna.

“So, are you going to tell me why the sudden need to get absolutely sloshed tonight?”

I sighed. For a second there, I was actually having fun.

I took a large sip and cleared my throat. “I think there’s something going on between Robbie and a girl he’s working with.”

Ethan bared his teeth. “Shite, why do you think that?”

I showed him the Instagram footage of the dancing, seething as I re-watched it for the fifth time. Each screening made my blood boil more rapidly.

“Well, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything,” he said, frowning and watching it again. “They’re not exactly bent over the bar stools, are they? Maybe they’re just having a laugh?”

“I saw a message from her too,” I explained. “Can’t wait, babe!” I recited with flirty enthusiasm.

“Mmm…”

“It’s suspicious, right?”

Ethan sipped his drink. “You say she’s Australian?”

“Yes.” I dug my nails into my hands. “And if you say anything about Robbie going down under, I’m going to have to kill you.
