APPENDIX TO CHAPTER 5

5.1

János Mádl, KIOSZ general secretary:

PENTECOST BALANCE SHEET

Pentecost is the feast of ideological tongues of fire, of enlightenment, and at this time it is useful for us to take account of our own balance sheet. The Christian handicraft movement has reached its second decade, and with the lessons of the many great battles fought and the resulting tasks, let us review the situation on this holy feast. . . .

We saw clearly from the beginning that help for handicraft problems must come from the handicraft community itself. In its distress it was not even aware that it had to rise and start of its own strength to call attention to itself. This starting on its own after the war was the germ of the awakening to self-consciousness of the handicraft community, and the credit for this belongs to KIOSZ. In those times of chaos all traditions were disdained and everything new and unknown was glorified. The leadership of KIOSZ had the courage to return to the old established foundation, to save the most beautiful handicraft traditions, and once again raise an altar to honest work, to competence and integrity.

We never took the easy way out, we never incited people to rebellion, because they had enough to be embittered about, and we did not promise them heaven, because we are Christians and we know that we all have to earn that for ourselves. We chose the more difficult path and spoke to hungry, despondent people in rags of honest work, of competence and integrity, because we knew that lasting success and the ultimate goal can only be reached on this road. How much intellectual and moral energy this requires is only known to those who, not shirking back after repeated attempts of having to begin anew, have carried it through to the end. Those who cannot fully appreciate this work, let them try it and they will soon realize that irresponsible blustering is to no avail.

The worldview of the Christian handicraft community developed in this spirit and from this work, with recognition of the essential nature of its problems. It came to realize what problems it had to solve itself, and others that did not harm the general national interest and could rightfully be presented to the government for solution. It became convinced that dealing with human lives and material goods is a matter of conscience, and ignoring this is a most grievous offence against the laws of God and nature. These realizations determined our goals, these gave direction to our work, and we only used means worthy of them.

Our goal is the elevation of the handicraft community, its recognition by society, to have it receive its worthy place in the service of national interests and Christian aims. In this work and in this battle we have always acted with courage, and we will continue to act with courage, because we know that thereby we are of great service not only to the handicraft community, but to our nation.

We do not seek wrongful advantages for ourselves and the handicraft community.
