Maybug
listening to daybreak
there is no separate me
who is listening.
A dead maybug on the grass, they donât last long â like fireworks. I am rested, my heart is stable and peace reigns over me. A week has passed and I think about the half-cut lawn. I spend the days in my chair outside, wearing a Hawaiian-print shirt and a sarong, reading all the poems by Stevie Smith and smiling at her silly little drawings with their hint of menace. I am slow and happy.
I have seen death a few times; it holds no fear. I have seen the life drift out of people and animals until it failed to return. I have killed animals, watched them be killed by other animals, and I have been close to my own death. Close enough to accept it as a friend that teaches me how to live well, joyously and connected to the world around me as we change and look into each other.
