Chapter Nineteen

Then

Canada, 1985

“You have to stop squirming and do up your seatbelt.” Doug grinned as he reached across to buckle up his wife.

“I can’t help it. I’m so happy.”

“And what would you have to be happy about?”

“Well, for starters I am finally going to meet your brother.”

“I warn you, he’s not as handsome as I am.”

“No one could be.” She bestowed a peck on his cheek.

“And what else might you be happy about, Mademoiselle Madeleine?”

“You can’t call me that,” she answered, touching her stomach. “I am Madame O’Hara. And the father of our child would do well to remember it, eh.”

Doug groaned. “Don’t say ‘eh’ at the end of every sentence. Canadians don’t do that, honest. Have you ever heard me do that, eh?”

“Sometimes when we make love.”

“I’m not saying ‘eh’, I’m shouting ‘yeah.’ I have the world’s hottest wife.”

“I hope you still feel that way once I’m huge and go waddling down the hill into Gustavia to buy diapers.”

“You will have the most beautiful waddle of any woman in the world.”

They were flying to Edmonton so Madeleine could finally meet Doug’s family. It had taken five years for their schedules to coincide. Doug hadn’t wanted to take Madeleine to Alberta in the winter and summer was a busy time for the construction industry, but this year Ed was taking August off. Doug couldn’t wait. He’d visited his brother at least twice a year, usually en route from Russia or the Middle East but this was the first time Madeleine could make the trip. And to make it even more special, she was pregnant — four and a half months along.

Doug leaned back in his seat, smiling at her efforts at learning about Canadian idioms and culture — questioning Mimi and even spending hours listening to the CBC. She wanted desperately for his brother to accept her.

“What is this West Edmonton Mall they want to take me to?” Madeleine asked.

“The biggest mall in the world. It has an amusement park and lots of shopping.”

“Like in Gustavia?”

Doug laughed. “No, but you’ll see when you go with Deb, Ed’s wife. What I really want is to show you the mountains. Jasper isn’t that far away.”

“You know we have mountains in Europe too . . . you may have heard of the Alps?” she teased.

“But the Rockies are something else.” He squeezed her hand. “We’ll rent a car and go stay in this terrific hotel for a few nights, just the two of us.”

“You won’t want to spend all your time with your family? I thought that was the purpose of this trip.”

“I love my brother but Ed and I are best in short spells.”

Madeleine turned from him and looked out the window. He could barely hear her say, “I wish I had a family to spend time with.” He knew that her mother and sister’s stubborn refusal to stay in touch hurt his wife deeply. The only way she got any family news was through her Tante Louise, who forgot more than she remembered.
