Emmy had been on a three-day stint of double shifts. She’d also spent way too much time for her liking ferrying Callum hither and thither for cricket. On top of the general stresses of mum life and life life, she’d WhatsApp messaged back and forth with Katy multiple times and still felt very guilty about the secret she was having to keep.

In soft blue tracksuit bottoms, a white T-shirt, trainers, and with her hair in a bun knot on the top of her head, she stood in the Love Emmy x shop with a mug of tea in her hand and assessed what was what. She hummed to herself as she ran her hand over the mirrored dresser and smiled at a group of dainty gold lockets in the display cabinet. Things were taking shape. Sunlight streamed through the large front windows, a tram trundled past, and apart from the Katy thing constantly in the back of her mind, life felt quite okay. She fussed with one of the lockets, moved a little pale pink velvet pouch into place, and leaned back to scrutinise the effect. All of it was looking lovely.

As she stood just staring around for a bit whilst she drank her tea, the hush was broken by the back door opening. Emmy poked her head around the door and peered through the storeroom to see Tom sauntering in with a toolbox in his hand.

‘Morning!’ Tom called out cheerily.

Emmy frowned. ‘What are you doing here? I thought you had meetings all day. I didn’t expect to see you.’

‘Why? What are you trying to hide from me?’ Tom joked. ‘Got my replacement upstairs?’

Emmy joked back as her insides shuddered. If only he knew she was keeping secrets. She laughed way too cheerfully. ‘Ha ha. Yep, totally got my boyfriend upstairs hiding. Don’t go up there. You don’t know what you might find.’

Tom chuckled and flourished his hand around. ‘I come bearing gifts.’

‘What kind of gifts?’

‘I have got a little delivery for you today.’

‘Oh?’ Emmy replied, intrigued. She wasn't expecting any packages. ‘Like what?’

‘Yep, I’ve got a van parked just down the lane. I was just checking to see where you were. Follow me,’ Tom said, gesturing with his hand for Emmy to follow him.

Emmy's curiosity was piqued. ‘What in the world?’ She grabbed her phone from the counter and followed Tom out through the back and down the path at the side of the small courtyard garden. A nondescript white van was idling by the gate.

Seeing her questioning look, Tom gave a conspiratorial wink. ‘Trust me, you're going to love this surprise. I’m going to be the best bloke on Darling. Possibly the whole planet.’

Emmy thought it must be another e-bike. ‘Ahh, you got a bike for yourself. Excellent.’

Tom raised his eyebrows as he opened the van’s back doors with a flourish. Nestled inside was a large object covered by a grey paint-splodged dust sheet.

‘What on earth have you got there?’ Emmy asked, laughing. The shape was bulky and long.
