The next week passed in a blur for Meg. She never let herself think about what had happened between her and Grant in the dining room. Yes, he’d shaken her to her very core. Her need had shaken her. But she carefully locked those memories away in a tiny corner of her mind. She would deal with them later.
Besides, she had plenty to keep her busy in the meantime. She had multiple appointments with the lawyer Dalton had hired to represent her interests in custody matters with Grant. Though she liked the woman, who promised to make this as easy as possible on Meg, Meg still hated the idea of negotiating custody with Grant. She couldn’t think too long about it, so she kept that part of her brain locked in stasis most of the time. Of course, the only thing she wanted to think about less was the idea of Pearl going under the knife. The appointments with doctors and surgeons seemed endless. That part of her brain she shut away too.
She knew what was in store for them with the surgery. She’d been researching it for a long time. She’d read so much of the literature about it, sometimes she thought she could do the surgery herself. Maybe in her sleep. After all, she did actually dream about it.
The procedure was a relatively simple one. The doctors would go in and sew a patch over the hole in Pearl’s heart. As she healed the tissue of her heart would gradually grow over the patch. It would become a part of her. Forever.
And wasn’t that what Meg feared most about Grant? He was in their lives now. Forever. Pearl’s heart would grow around him and there would be no getting him out.
Meg knew this was a good thing. That Pearl deserved to have a loving father. Meg was worried about herself, because how was she supposed to function with Grant in their lives?
So, instead of asking herself those questions, she focused on Pearl’s health.
She had feared that changing doctors and moving to Houston would slow down the timetable for Pearl’s surgery, but the opposite was true. It turned out money really did move mountains. Or in this case, surgical schedules. And before she knew it, Pearl’s procedure was on the books and only two weeks away.
Meg’s anxiety over the impending operation diminished any pleasure she might have taken in being right about at least one thing: she truly didn’t need a nanny. She had more than enough people spending time with Pearl as it was. Ms. Grump—whose name, it turned out, was Gisele and not Grendel at all— never warmed up to Pearl, but Pearl had Angela wrapped around her finger from the first smile. Grant went in to work late and came home early to spend time with her. Then, after her bedtime, he’d stay in his office late into the night finishing up the work he wasn’t getting done during the day. Some days he didn’t go in at all, but just spent several hours in his office on the second floor.
