“That was . . . that was bizarre,” Laura started, as she dug through the floor-to-ceiling dresser for something that resembled sleepwear. “She reminds me so much of you, it’s like looking back in time, to what I imagine you were like when you were young. The wavy brown hair, the deep green eyes, the hint of a dimple in her left cheek. The openness to talk about anything with anyone. The persistence to get what she wants. It’s . . . well, she’s definitely your daughter, that one.”

Mel was leaning casually in the door frame, arms crossed loosely, watching her love dig, knowing which drawer to send her to, but letting it all play out anyway. Letting Laura go through her dresser so freely felt cleansing, as if she were saying, “I have nothing to hide, not anymore.”

“Yeah, well . . . she likes you. I don’t know what I did right to get such a compassionate kid, who doesn’t absolutely hate me like she should at her age, but, she is amazing. I love her more than anything,” Mel paused, moving out of the doorway and crossing the room to take her lover in her arms. Holding on tightly, as tightly as she could without causing pain, she confessed. “I love you more than anything, too. I love you so much, it hurts me at the core of my very being, because I know you shouldn’t have given me a second chance. But you did, and that is what makes you you. You never should have agreed to see me that first time—you had no reason to—and you certainly shouldn’t have called me back after I re-appeared. I am incredibly lucky. And, I’m incredibly, incredibly happy.”

Laura was holding a pair of mismatched cotton pajamas, but lost her grip, somehow unable to keep hold of the material after hearing those heartfelt words. She trusted Mel again, something she didn’t think was possible, but unexplainably, was now perfectly natural.

“I love you too . . .” she stopped, considering. “I never stopped loving you, as much as I told myself I should, that I would, that I had. I think, what we had back then was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but what we have now . . . what we have now is for a lifetime.”

Laura hesitated, reflecting on their earlier dinnertime conversation with the curious teenager.

“Mel . . . it was.”

“It was what?”

“It was love at first sight, for me. It was. The moment I got out of my head for a change, when I looked up from that coffee bar, the moment I saw you in that suit with your hair up and with those glasses on, the moment your voice first penetrated my ears, it was. I can still smell the cinnamon on your breath from when you whispered in my ear. I can still taste the red wine on your lips from the first time they touched mine. I can’t explain it, and I fought it . . .
