Hudson still wasnât happy about Kendraâs plan, but at least sheâd gone along with his safety measures. He didnât trust Robinson one inch.
âIâm hungry,â Joey said from the connecting room.
Hudd moved over to meet with father and son. âIâll pick up something for lunch. What would you like?â
âFried chicken!â Joey cried.
âNo, we had that for dinner last night,â Jamison admonished. âHow about burgers from your favorite fast-food restaurant?â
âOkay,â Joey agreed. âCan we go there to eat?â
âAfraid not, we need to stay here,â Jamison said.
âWhere is the danger coming from?â Joey wanted to know.
âNowhere in particular. You and your dad are safe here,â Hudd said. âThere may not be any real danger, but weâre just being extra cautious, okay?â
âI guess.â Joey looked frustrated. âBut Iâd rather be playing with my friends.â
âI know, and youâll get to do that very soon,â Jamison assured him. âJust hang in there for a while, okay?â
âYeah, yeah,â Joey grumbled.
Hudd could tell the novelty of watching movies was already wearing thin. He took their food order, then went to get Kendraâs too.
âMaybe I should go,â she said. âYou need to stay hidden from the detectives for as long as possible.â
âNo need, they wonât find me.â He wasnât that worried about the pair. âIâll be back before you know it.â
She sighed. âFine, but if youâre not back in thirty minutes, Iâm going to head to the police station to find you.â
The image of her stalking into the police station to rescue him almost made him smile. âIâll call you if Iâm delayed for some reason.â
He left the motel, easing along the corner to sneak out through the back of the building. The setup here wasnât as nice as the previous motel, but the situation couldnât be helped. He knew it was only a matter of time before he was arrested. Once that warrant was issued, the detectives would realize heâd checked out of the motel. Theyâd send a BOLO out for him, which would make it that much more difficult to stay under the radar.
If he were alone, it would be easy. Heâd been here for a week without anyone knowing. But that was before the added responsibility of watching over a kid, the kidâs father, and Kendra.
He managed to get to the fast-food restaurant easily enough, but he had to wait fifteen minutes for the order to be fulfilled. As he was about to leave, a police cruiser pulled into the parking lot.
Hudson turned and left the restaurant from the opposite door. Outside, he hesitated, then risked a glance at the cop who entered.
Unfortunately, it was a cop he didnât recognize. Heâd hoped to run into David Nevins, the former army veteran. Too bad, he had no idea if the guy was even working today.
He kept his head down while taking as many shortcuts as possible to get back to the motel. They gathered in Jamisonâs room to eat, and he hid a smile when Joe Senior looked surprised when Kendra insisted on saying a brief prayer before they ate.
