Hudson still wasn’t happy about Kendra’s plan, but at least she’d gone along with his safety measures. He didn’t trust Robinson one inch.

“I’m hungry,” Joey said from the connecting room.

Hudd moved over to meet with father and son. “I’ll pick up something for lunch. What would you like?”

“Fried chicken!” Joey cried.

“No, we had that for dinner last night,” Jamison admonished. “How about burgers from your favorite fast-food restaurant?”

“Okay,” Joey agreed. “Can we go there to eat?”

“Afraid not, we need to stay here,” Jamison said.

“Where is the danger coming from?” Joey wanted to know.

“Nowhere in particular. You and your dad are safe here,” Hudd said. “There may not be any real danger, but we’re just being extra cautious, okay?”

“I guess.” Joey looked frustrated. “But I’d rather be playing with my friends.”

“I know, and you’ll get to do that very soon,” Jamison assured him. “Just hang in there for a while, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Joey grumbled.

Hudd could tell the novelty of watching movies was already wearing thin. He took their food order, then went to get Kendra’s too.

“Maybe I should go,” she said. “You need to stay hidden from the detectives for as long as possible.”

“No need, they won’t find me.” He wasn’t that worried about the pair. “I’ll be back before you know it.”

She sighed. “Fine, but if you’re not back in thirty minutes, I’m going to head to the police station to find you.”

The image of her stalking into the police station to rescue him almost made him smile. “I’ll call you if I’m delayed for some reason.”

He left the motel, easing along the corner to sneak out through the back of the building. The setup here wasn’t as nice as the previous motel, but the situation couldn’t be helped. He knew it was only a matter of time before he was arrested. Once that warrant was issued, the detectives would realize he’d checked out of the motel. They’d send a BOLO out for him, which would make it that much more difficult to stay under the radar.

If he were alone, it would be easy. He’d been here for a week without anyone knowing. But that was before the added responsibility of watching over a kid, the kid’s father, and Kendra.

He managed to get to the fast-food restaurant easily enough, but he had to wait fifteen minutes for the order to be fulfilled. As he was about to leave, a police cruiser pulled into the parking lot.

Hudson turned and left the restaurant from the opposite door. Outside, he hesitated, then risked a glance at the cop who entered.

Unfortunately, it was a cop he didn’t recognize. He’d hoped to run into David Nevins, the former army veteran. Too bad, he had no idea if the guy was even working today.

He kept his head down while taking as many shortcuts as possible to get back to the motel. They gathered in Jamison’s room to eat, and he hid a smile when Joe Senior looked surprised when Kendra insisted on saying a brief prayer before they ate.
