Mason wanted to grin at Aubrey’s sassy attitude but did his best to cover his reaction. He’d admired her before, but the longer they worked together, the more he realized she had a heart of gold and a spine of steel.

Until she saw blood. Then again, hearing about the tragic loss of her son, he couldn’t blame her one bit for her reaction.

“You have a right to be upset,” Russo said. “So far we’ve questioned everyone in the neighborhood and found two people who saw Lucas Tuesday morning, heading to school. Since he never made it, we believe that’s when he was taken. One person in the apartment building described a man who matches Jose, but we haven’t gotten his last name yet.”

“We did get some information from one of the Blue Devils inmates,” Lee said. “Seems everyone is scared to death of el jefe. We’ve heard his headquarters is in Tijuana or in El Cajon.”

“Those two cities are not exactly close together,” Mason drawled.

“I know,” Russo agreed, “which is why we can’t be sure either location is accurate.”

“Both of them are at least twenty minutes from East Village and in opposite directions,” Aubrey pointed out. “That seems wrong. I’m sure he must be close by.”

“We plan to keep looking and asking questions. The good news is that our guys picked up Raymond Nassar.” Russo glanced at Mason. “Thanks to your call.”

“Where?” she demanded. “Why weren’t your cops closer when his friends shot at us?”

“He ran toward Petco Park, which is where our guys scooped him up.” Lee shrugged. “They heard the gunfire, but by the time they arrived, you two were long gone.”

“Can you convince Nassar to talk?” Mason asked.

“That’s the plan.” Lee glanced back at the SUV. “Sounds like he wasn’t one of the shooters this time, though.”

“No, but he was in the stolen vehicle, which should be enough to use as leverage to find out more about Jose and el jefe.” Mason drilled the detective with a narrow look. “If Nassar wasn’t the shooter himself, then he was the driver.”

“Exactly. He played a role either way. We’ll let you know what we find out.” Russo glanced toward the street when a boxy-shaped van pulled up. “There’s the crime scene tech. He’ll get the slug out of the seat cushion and send it in for testing. Maybe it will match with another crime.”

“That reminds me.” Mason reached into the SUV and removed two guns. “I forgot to give these to you before. I took one of these off Jose, the other from a Blue Devil outside Twisted earlier today. You may want to see if either weapon matches any evidence you have on file related to other gun crimes.”

Lee scowled. “You forgot? Seriously?”

Mason shrugged. “A lot has happened today. Besides, I’m the one giving you key evidence when you’ve given me squat.”

“It’s not our job to give you evidence,” Lee protested hotly.

“Easy now, we’re all on the same side here,” Russo said in a consoling tone. “We all want to find Lucas as soon as possible.
