Chapter Six
Bathing Roscoe in the bathtub was an adventure. By the time sheâd finished, they were both soaked. After drying herself and the puppy off with towels, sheâd broken down and used her own comb to pick through his matted fur. When she finished, little Roscoe looked much better.
Kirby watched the bathing event with dark, curious eyes. When Roscoe jumped up and tried to nip at him, Kirby easily took charge. The puppy soon figured out which of them was the alpha male, and it wasnât Roscoe.
At least the pup was house-trained. He went over to the door when he needed to go outside. Callie opened the motel door just enough to look around first, before stepping outside with Roscoe. Kirby followed, clearly on guard.
Watching Roscoe made her smile. She wanted to keep the puppy so badly, but she knew having Roscoe long-term would be impossible, especially if she ended up living on the street.
It wouldnât be the first time, or the last. Going back to the Lizard Lounge would be one step in the right direction, though. The job hadnât been too bad, and Pedro, the owner, was a nice man who had agreed to pay his serving staff in cash. Her tips had been decent.
Still, Roscoe deserved better. Veterinary fees were expensive, and she had no idea if heâd had all his immunizations yet or not. The puppy was also full of energy, no way could she leave him alone for the long hours she was forced to work just to make ends meet. Feeding him was another consideration. If Roscoe grew to be even half the size of Kirby, sheâd be in trouble.
Okay, keeping him was not an option. Better she came to grips with that realization now rather than keep dwelling on it. Sheâd just enjoy Roscoe while she could.
The puppy continued playing with Kirby. At one point, the K9 looked over at her as if to say, canât you make him stop? She had to give the older dog credit for not just biting Roscoe to put him in his place. When Kirby was done playing, he let Roscoe know. The puppy then wandered over to play with her.
When the chilly air got to be too much, she headed back inside. Sheâd never owned a television, but now that there was one available, she used the remote to turn it on.
Flipping through the channels, she realized she hadnât missed much by not having a television and access to cable. It didnât take long for her to become bored by the talking heads on both the news and the daytime shows. There was a movie on one channel, but it was already half over, and she was having trouble following the convoluted plot. She shut the thing off and sat in silence.
Roscoe fell asleep on the bed next to her. Kirby was stretched out in front of the door, his head between his paws. It made her feel safe knowing no one would get past him.
Her thoughts drifted back to her mother.
