The Eastern Advanced Detachment submarine I-21, the same one that was attacked unsuccessfully by Yorktown’s Dauntlesses on 2 May, arrived at her patrol position just west of Nouméa at dawn on 7 May and was immediately rewarded with a contact.23 At 0630, her sonar picked up propeller noises, and she began a submerged approach that culminated in the firing of two Type 95 oxygen torpedoes at SS Chloe, a 4641GRT steamer of Greek registry en route from Newcastle, New South Wales, to Nouméa with general cargo. Both of the normally reliable torpedoes detonated prematurely, but Commander Matsumura was determined not to allow this target to escape. He brought his submarine to the surface and had his 5.5in/40 deck gun manned. It took seventy rounds, but Chloe finally was sunk by gunfire 35 nm west of Nouméa. Before she sank, Matsumura allowed her crew to take to their boats, and supplied them with food and navigation instructions. This generosity on Matsumura’s part proved unnecessary because, not long after I-21 submerged to resume her patrol, a PBY from Nouméa found the survivors and they were rescued by aircraft over the course of the day.
