Pacifica didn’t realize what the bundle was at first. More accurately, an instinct deep inside her stopped her from trying to recognize the shape. But like a slow-acting poison, realization crept through her, filling her veins with ice. She squeezed shut her eyes and released a blood-curdling scream.

Sinner cradled the decomposing body of a small child.

Playtime’s over, Big Shot thought with a grin. He knew Pacifica’s scream meant she’d run into Sinner, and that meant he was one step closer to payday.

The thrill of victory giving him speed, Big Shot hurried along the corridor. He needed to get there before the girl said the wrong thing. The last thing Big Shot needed at that point was his prey getting sliced to ribbons by his insane colleague.

A blinding light suddenly flashed at his feet. Big Shot, his eyes wide, dove to the side.

An explosion of flame engulfed the spot where he’d been standing. The man rolled to safety, his cloak narrowly avoiding the far-reaching licks of the flame. Blinking against the blistering hot air, he stared at the fading sparks in surprise.

It was Laevatein—the same spell he’d used earlier— only far, far more powerful.

Big Shot scrambled to his feet and turned. He could just make out the form of a young woman standing in the shadows.

“Raquel Casull,” Big Shot called arrogantly. “You’re more than a little late.”
