Finally, it is important to note that both honey bees and bumblebees will sting if provoked. The specialised barbed sting of the honey bee remains in the skin and the bee from which it came dies. The sting of the bumblebee, a modified ovipositor, is withdrawn from the victim and its owner lives on. The venom of bee stings contains proteins to which many people are allergic, some severely so, and it is therefore important to take care when bees are present and not to interfere in any way with their activities. Moreover, many of the plants that are attractive to bees and non-stinging solitary wasps are also attractive to the rather more unwelcome colonial wasps and hornets. Again, caution should be exercised when these are about.
