The School Culture Typology Activity and the School Culture Survey can be used together to give you a better understanding of your school's culture. Each of these instruments can reinforce the data from the other. Whereas the SCS may be better for establishing baseline data, the School Culture Typology Activity might be more sensitive in picking up subtle changes early in the change process.
The trick for school leaders is in understanding how any item from either instrument can exist in unique ways at their school. Trust among teachers, for example, can take different forms. Getting teachers to trust one another in a culture that doesn't place value on it can be challenging. Doing it wrong—such as by proclaiming from the top of a desk that you are going to change the culture—will only make things worse.
Another challenge to bear in mind is that teacher self-reporting may or may not be precise. Will teachers respond honestly, or will they feel coerced to respond in a way that makes the school culture look good? Is it possible that a few negative teachers might skew results to make the school culture look bad? It's important to consider these questions whenever examining data related to people's perceptions. Still, if we can get a good response rate—50 percent or better—then we can usually trust the results.
