The next morning, things were, of course, chaotic in the Wilde house.
Mr. Wilde was tuning a guitar with one hand while slurping cereal with the other. Mrs. Wilde was doing finger painting. On a kitchen wall. She wanted to test-run a decorating idea she had for her Good Earth preschool kids.
Lance, the artist and sculptor, was helping his mother by molding oatmeal clumps and sticking them on the swirl-painted wall.
âAwesome,â said Mrs. Wilde, painting over the oatmeal, incorporating it into her piece.
(I wondered if the insurance company would also pay to have the kitchen wall repaired.)
Meanwhile, Ash was using chopsticks from last nightâs Chinese takeout food to beat out a drum solo on her and Lanceâs lunch containers.
The home was a wonderful mess.
No way were Poop and I going to let Scaredy Cat ruin it for us.
When the Wildes had all departed for the day, Poop and I scurried out the rear pet door.
âWeâre going to change Strawberry Lane!â I declared.
âYes,â said Poop. âWe definitely are.â
âWeâre going to end Scaredy Catâs reign of terror in this cul-de-sac.â
âYes!â said Poop. âWeâre going to do that, too!â
âWeâre going to turn the tables and banish him to the woods for all time!â
âReally?â said Poop. âThat sounds kind of mean. Plus, Ermine and K and all the strays are in the woods. Do we really want to send Scaredy Cat there? Heâll just torture themâ¦â
âTu as raison, mon amie.â
âHuh?â
âYou are right, my friend. I was getting ahead of myself. First we must put together a team of like-minded cats to stand up to our common enemy. Working together, we can remove this threatâforever!â
âNo, you canât!â cried a voice behind us.
It was Ermine.
She skittered out of the underbrush, nervously glancing this way and that (then over her shoulder), as if she were afraid she was being followed.
âI slept on it,â Ermine continued. âWe need to cancel this revolution. Scaredy Cat is too powerful. Heâs too strong. You ever see him do that boiling thing with a teakettle?â
âYes,â said Poop, shuddering at the memory. âHe said he could make our blood boil, too!â
âBut,â I insisted, âweâre safe now. The owl will protect us!â
âHuh?â said Ermine. âWhat owl?â
âThe plastic one with the solar-powered bobbing head,â explained Poop.
âMr. Wilde put him on a post in the backyard,â I told Ermine. âAnd just like that, Scaredy Cat was afraid to come anywhere near our home.â
âOr so it seemed,â added Poop. âIâm not one hundred percent sure. Maybe he was just taking the night off. Saving up his superpowers for another dayâ¦â
âHe was frightened!â I insisted. âWe now know his weakness. Owls!â
âPlastic owls,â said Poop. âWith solar-powered bobbing heads.â
Suddenly, Ermine shrieked.
âThere!â she gasped. âOn the telephone pole! See it?â
âSee what?â I asked.
âNear the bottom. Fresh scratchings. Itâs a message from Scaredy Cat.â
The three of us flew over to examine the markings etched into the wooden pole.
âItâs his secret code!â said Ermine, studying the scarred wood.
