13 birds mini art quilt

Spring is here! The cold and wet weather is finally over, and the skies are filled with birds returning from their winter holidays. This little quilt is based on a watercolor painting I did with my daughter (page 12).

Finished size: 12½” × 9½” (31.7cm × 24.1cm)

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Fabrics

10” × 13” (25cm × 33cm) piece of white cotton or linen

14” × 17” (36cm × 43cm) piece of fabric for backing

Scraps of cotton for birds

Notions

14” × 17” (36cm × 43cm) piece of batting

10” × 13” (25cm × 33cm) piece of paper-backed fusible web

Black machine embroidery thread (30-weight)

White machine quilting thread

Temporary fabric adhesive spray or quilting pins

2” (5cm) piece of ribbon or trim (optional)

Button for trim (optional)

2 buttons for hanging

INSTRUCTIONS

Seam allowances are ¼” (6mm) unless otherwise noted.

1. Prepare the appliqué pieces as described on pages 17–20. Trace the patterns (page 63) onto the paper side of the fusible web, cut apart, press it to the fabric scraps, and cut out the shapes.

2. Arrange the birds on the fabric, keeping the outer seam allowances in mind.
