TABLECLOTH: BLACKWORK MODERN

The geometrical shapes of blackwork are perfect for creating more modern patterns. Take details from traditional pattern templates, change the scale and shapes, and you have an embroidery that is far more contemporary than folk costume in look and feel.

TECHNIQUE: blackwork

SUPPLIES:

•black DMC mouliné

•evenweave linen 10 threads per cm/ 28 count, 34 x 74 cm/ 13.4" x 29.1", dimensions when finished: 30 x 70 cm/ 11.8" x 27.6"

PATTERN: see page 116

METHOD: Whipstitch, or zigzag, all raw edges so that the fabric doesn’t fray. Measure out the center and embroider filled and semi-filled squares using the pattern on page 116 as a guide (and the picture below) with two threads mouliné floss. Sew the squares by counting threads. One cross stitch is sewn over two threads in the weave. Once you’ve embroidered all the squares, draw lines for the edges using pencil, or a marker pen. Embroider these using back stitch. Fold the edge double all around and hem the tablecloth. When finished, the cloth should measure approximately 30 x 70 cm/ 11.8" x 27.6". Iron the cloth smooth.
