CHAPTER TEN

INVITING CHRISTINA TO join them had been one thing. Brett could blame that on the early hour and the weird closeness he’d felt staring at her over morning coffee. Following her to work and convincing her to go along in the family ride was a whole different level of crazy.

Why had he persisted? At her first no, he could have easily bowed out, but seeing her there, surrounded by all the curious faces, and knowing how hard she worked at the diner and had taken care of his kids and... He couldn’t walk away. The old Brett would have left her there alone, because he was determined to protect his family first.

If anyone deserved a beautiful afternoon on one of the prettiest lakes in East Tennessee, it was hardworking Christina Braswell. The concerned citizens of Sweetwater could take their interest and...

“This is the life,” Christina murmured as she leaned over the edge of the boat to trail her fingers through the water. “Why don’t we do this every day?”

The full-steam irritation building as he considered how many bad decisions he’d made in order to appease the people who might judge him disappeared in a puff of her happy sigh.

If it hadn’t worked out beautifully, he might regret the impulse that had convinced him to turn into the campground parking lot. Riley’s uncharacteristic giggles at the way Christina squealed when she dangled her feet over the side of the boat near the falls had driven apart the tiny crack that had been growing ever since she’d answered his SOS.

Then Parker had dared her to bait her own hook with one of the worms he’d been too squeamish to touch himself. When she’d done it flawlessly before tossing the line out to reel in the biggest catch of the day, his son’s jaw had dropped.

Brett understood why. If Leanne had been there, her complaining would have already driven them off the water. Too much sitting still and bugs and nature all around.

But Christina? Her ponytail was crooked. Her shirt had wet splotches here and there, which should not be inspected too closely.

And her nose was turning the prettiest shade of pink.

He pulled off his lucky hat and tugged it down over her forehead.

“What’s this for? I don’t think I’m the one who needs luck.” Christina motioned over her shoulder at the cooler. “I’ve got dinner covered. Well, I’ve got my dinner covered.”

Riley straightened in her seat. “You’ve been keeping them?” Her horrified tone was familiar. So was the wild way she shook her head. She’d inherited Leanne’s drama. “No. No, no. No.” She moved to the cooler and yanked open the lid. “Back in the water.” She pointed so imperiously, it did not invite discussion, so he and Christina knelt in the bottom of the boat to rescue the three healthy fish swimming in the cold water of the cooler.

After they were nothing but a memory and a faint glint of jaunty tail splashes, Christina frowned. “I had my dinner covered.
